Shopee, Lazada, TikTok Shop or Your Own Store? What Malaysian Sellers Should Do

Marketplaces bring traffic. Your own store brings margin and customer relationships. Here's how to combine them.

Many Malaysian sellers start on a marketplace — it's fast, familiar and comes with built-in traffic. But as you grow, the question appears: should you build your own online store as well? The best answer for most brands is “both, for different jobs”.

When marketplaces make sense

  • You're testing a new product and need quick validation.
  • Your price point suits impulse buys and promotions such as 9.9, 11.11 and 12.12.
  • TikTok Shop can be powerful if you can create engaging short video and live streams.

When your own store makes sense

  • You want higher margins by avoiding marketplace commissions on repeat buyers.
  • You want to build a brand, not just a listing.
  • You sell bundles, subscriptions, custom orders or higher-value items that need explanation.
  • You want to remarket by WhatsApp, email and ads to people who already bought.

Payments and delivery customers expect

Malaysian shoppers expect a mix of options at checkout: FPX online banking, credit/debit cards and popular e-wallets, and sometimes buy-now-pay-later. Gateways such as Billplz, ToyyibPay, iPay88 and Stripe cover many of these. For shipping, courier aggregators and local couriers let you show accurate rates for West and East Malaysia.

The hybrid strategy we recommend

  1. Use marketplaces for discovery. List your bestsellers and run campaigns during mega-sales.
  2. Move repeat buyers to your own store. Include a card in each parcel with a discount code or WhatsApp channel invite — within each platform's rules.
  3. Invest in your own SEO and content so you're found even when people don't open an app. See SEO services.
  4. Retarget and automate with email and WhatsApp flows.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Launching a store with no traffic plan.
  • Copy-pasting marketplace listings without optimising them for search.
  • Ignoring checkout friction — too many steps or missing local payment options.
  • Forgetting product data hygiene: consistent titles, images, SKUs and stock levels across channels.
