When someone in Petaling Jaya searches “dental clinic near me” or someone in Penang searches “best nasi kandar”, Google shows a map with three businesses first. If you're not in that “map pack”, you're missing the people ready to visit or call today. This guide walks through the local SEO steps that matter most.
1. Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is free and is the biggest local ranking lever. Make sure you:
- Claim and verify your listing.
- Choose the most accurate primary category (for example “Dentist”, not just “Health”).
- Add secondary categories, services, opening hours (including public holidays) and a service area if relevant.
- Write a clear description with your main services and location — naturally, without keyword stuffing.
- Upload real photos: storefront, interior, team, products. Add new photos regularly.
- Add your WhatsApp number, website and booking link.
2. Keep your name, address and phone consistent (NAP)
Your business name, address and phone number should be identical across your website, Google profile, Facebook page, directories and Waze/Apple Maps listings. Inconsistencies confuse search engines and customers.
3. Earn reviews — ethically
- Ask happy customers right after a positive experience, via WhatsApp or a QR code with your review link.
- Reply to every review, positive or negative, within a few days.
- Never buy fake reviews or offer incentives that break Google's policies. It can get your listing suspended.
4. Target the way Malaysians actually search
People search in English, Bahasa Melayu and Chinese, and often mix them. Examples include “kedai kopi berdekatan”, “web design KL”, or “牙医 petaling jaya”. Include the language your customers use in your service descriptions, website copy and FAQs. Our multilingual marketing guide explains how.
5. Build helpful location and service pages
If you serve several areas (for example Kuala Lumpur, Subang Jaya and Shah Alam), create a dedicated page for each with unique content: local landmarks, directions, parking, staff and testimonials. Avoid duplicating the same page with only the city name swapped.
6. Make your website local-ready
- Show your address, map embed and opening hours on a contact page and in the footer.
- Use LocalBusiness schema markup so search engines understand your details.
- Make the site fast on mobile — local searchers are usually on their phones.
- Add a clear WhatsApp and call button.
7. Get listed in trusted local places
Claim profiles on Facebook, Waze, Apple Maps, Bing Places and relevant directories in your industry (for example property portals or healthcare listings). Local media mentions and community sponsorships also help.
How long does it take?
Profile and website improvements can show changes in a few weeks. In competitive areas like central KL, expect 3–6 months to rank consistently. Local SEO compounds: reviews, photos and content keep building your authority.
